Great tides at Mont Saint-Michel

A natural spectacle not to be missed

Mont Saint-Michel is famous for its enchanting landscapes and majestic abbey. Several times a year, it becomes the scene of an impressive natural phenomenon: the high tides. With an exceptional height difference, the tides at Mont Saint-Michel transform the landscape in spectacular fashion.

An ephemeral island

The great tides, some of the highest in Europe, transform the landscape, making the Mont an island and then an extension of the continent in a matter of hours.

These tides are a fascinating spectacle, attracting visitors from all over the world to watch the sea withdraw to impressive distances before returning quickly.
It's a moment when nature reclaims its rights, when the Mount detaches itself from the continent for a few hours, offering a vivid tableau that has inspired artists and poets down the centuries. High tides are also a reminder of the power of the elements and the importance of respecting our environment.

Experience the great tides in the comfort of Maison 1900

To make the most of this spectacle, there's nothing like a stay in our guest room or gites, ideally located near Mont Saint-Michel.

Relaxation and comfort in a unique setting

Our guest rooms and gites are also ideal for a relaxing stay. After admiring the high tides, take a dip in our swimming pool (heated from April to September) or relax in our jacuzzi. You can also relax in our sauna, ideal for warming up after a morning by the sea, or enjoy a good film (yours?) in our cinema.

To eat in or take away?

When you stay at Le 1900, you can enjoy a hearty breakfast and/or a delicious dinner at our table d'hôtes.

But since the tide doesn't wait and the stars, starting with the moon, dictate the tempo of the great tides, we can offer you gourmet breakfasts or picnics (with champagne if you wish!). You'll be able to make your experience even more magical and take full advantage of this exceptional setting.

Plan your stay for the next great tides

A little theory...

As you probably know, tides are caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun. The timing and strength of the tides therefore depend on their relative positions, but also on the Earth's rotation, the shape of the coasts and the seabed... It's not easy to find your way around without a tide calendar that gives the times of low tide, high tide and a tidal coefficient . The higher the coefficient, the greater the 'tidal range' (the difference in level between low and high water).

A great tide occurs when the coefficient exceeds 100 , when the tidal range exceeds 13 metres - more than a 4-storey building!

In the bay of Mont Saint-Michel, where the seabed is relatively flat, the tidal range is mainly horizontal: the sea withdraws for kilometres (no exaggeration...) and rises again, flooding the salt meadows and giving Mont Saint-Michel its island character.

A little practice...

To help you plan your next trip, here are month-by-month tables showing the next great tides. Just click on the date of your choice to check our availability on that date!

We will be delighted to advise you during your stay with us: where and at what time to go and see the tidal bore, where to get an overview of the bay, where to go to see the tidal range from a "more vertical" angle, for example.
